У typo&мiсто появился новый сайт с типографикой, чувствительной к размеру экрана. в наборе используется шрифт Playfair Display, созданный Клаусом Соренсеном.

На мероприятие зарегистрировались 95 участников и выступили 7 докладчиков. На данный момент это наибольший масштаб typo&мiсто. Среди участников были гости из Харькова.

Обзор докладов в хронологическом порядке

1. Алексей Ваняшин.
Мой доклад состоял из конкурсной части, которая оказалась по зубам местным любителям типографики.

Вторая часть была посвящена истории кириллицы и демонстрации свежих шрифтовых проектов. Затем я рассказал о шрифтовых событиях в Польше и Германии: конференции Typolub, и мероприятиях typeinberlin. Некоторые слайды, которые я показывал можно увидеть в презентации для TypoLub 2012, которая доступна на моем обучающем ресурсе по кириллице LearnСyrillic.

По просьбе Андрея Шевченко я рассказал об общедоступном «современном украинском шрифте» Арсенал, и о проекте бесплатных кириллических шрифтов free.type.org.ua. Любовь к шрифту Арсенал уже доказали мои студенты, используя его в проекте типографического словаря.

2. Лидия Троцюк, арт-директор Forforce, а также выпускница ХГАДИ, рассказала о своем опыте на мастер-классе по разработке шрифтов Crafting Type в Киеве. За два дня погружения в работу оказалось, что разработка шрифтов—довольно трудозатратное и сложное занятие. Обретя необходимые навыки Лидия теперь настроена на работу над кириллической частью корпоративного шрифта. В заключении Лидия поделилась слайдами дипломного проекта в ХАГДИ на тему разработки фирменного стиля олимпийского комитета Украины. Новый сайт комитета уже запущен.

3. Александр Зайцев, дизайнер студии psyho, выступил с практически полезным докладом о принципах веб-типографики. Для наглядности Александр рассказал о том, как пошагово выстраивалась таблица стилей, определяющих параметры шрифта, для проекта Дао дэ цзин.

Александр провел обзор популярных сервисов веб-шрифтов: Google Fonts, fontdeck, typekit. Сделал акцент на проблеме лицензий для веба: не все словолитни по умолчанию разрешают такое использование. Указал проблему некачественной кириллицы среди шрифтов на проекте Google Fonts.

4. Мария Дидук, выпускница ХГАДИ, показала интересный визуальный ряд акцидентных шрифтов, созданных студентами пятого курса Академии под руководством профессора В.И Лесняка и пригласила посетить просмотры. До поступления в Харьков Мария училась в днепропетровском ДТКХ у Елены Анатольевны Капустяк.

5. Игорь Малиновский—дизайнер, известный работами для культового журнала НАШ, в настоящее время директор студии DESIGN FABRIC, выступил с презентацией «шрифт вне правил». Это был рассказ о том, что существует акцидентная типографика, в которой выразительность и графический прием важнее удобочитаемости. в заключении Игорь продемонстрировал ролик о приемах деструкторизации шрифтов в персональной работе.

6. Елена Анатольевна Капустяк, преподаватель каллиграфии и шрифта в Днепропетровском театрально-художественном колледже(ДТХК) демонстрировала работы своих студентов по каллиграфии.

Елена Анатольевна показала несколько своих каллиграфических работ.

Вот один из образцов почерка, по которому занимаются студенты.

Во время моего визита в ДТХК я нашел вот эту работу по копированию шрифта из книги «шрифт в агитационном плакате». Эта работа ценна следованием традициям советской плакатной школе. Навыки, приобретенные в результате подобных упражнений, полезны для практикующих шрифтовых дизайнеров.

7. Виталий Сухомлин, директор агентства Sunday рассказал о работе над шрифтовой частью в логотипах на примере персональных работ.

Неформальное кулуарное общение происходило во время перерыва, и еще немного после окончания мероприятия. Публика Днепропетровска оказалась активной и интересующейся типографикой. Мероприятия typo&мiсто снова доказали свою актуальность и пользу.

The next cities to host Crafting Type were Kyiv and Lviv in Ukraine during 14-18 Dec, 2012. I was happy to join the team to teach in Ukraine, and share my knowledge on type design and Cyrillic. (Ukraine uses Cyrillic in writing).

The main format of the Ukrainian workshops was a two-day event. The programme was very concentrated with the aim of immersing students into the whole process of designing type from pencil sketches to a printout proof specimen. The Kyiv workshop was enforced by a local typography teacher Mykola Kovalchuyk who explained calligraphy basics, and greatly assisted in teaching and translating.

Here’s an overview of the whole process. The first day started off with sketching exercises.

After the first series of drawing letters, Dave introduced students to Gerrit Noordzij’s area drawing method. During the review-session we compared the initial sketches with the new ones using the mentioned technique. Participants very happy to see their progress in sketching and benefits of this method.

Octavio presented an ‘Introduction to Type Design’ lecture about balancing form and function throughout the history of Latin.

Octavio’s second lecture was an overview of existing type project. Each project was discussed and student input collected. The goal was to get students with different backgrounds and experiences inline with modern typography.

After the lectures students were asked to develop sketches of their soon-to-be-ditigal typefaces.

Having the sketches complete and software installed the participants moved on to digital drawing with bezier-curves. Designer Anton Kostenko demonstrates a clear straightforward design process from sketch to digital format.

Once the first letters are digitized he defines rhythm in metrics — something that is inseverable from the design process and should be dealt with from the start.

The next important stage is testing the typeface in various sizes. Seeing a first proof of a typeface is an eye-opener. It allows you to see how your font behaves in different areas of use. It can be surprising to find out that your work is well-suited or absolutely unimaginable for text-setting, if you planned it as a display font from the start. Or vice versa.

Another problem that occurs is the relation of metrics(or letter-spacing) to a given point size. Large or super-small sizes can require ample adjustments to the initial preset metrics. This experiment gives you an understanding that you should make you design decisions to suit the intended purpose and areas of use.

Here’s another student working with outlines, and then testing the produced font in a design application.

After the students have struggled with bezier-curves, I gave a lecture on ‘Digital Drawing Basics’,
explaining how curves in fonts are different from those in illustrations, and what are optical adjustments. My other lecture was on Cyrillic, and covered the history, and problems of designing multilingual typography. You can browse my Cyrillic lecture on here.

On the second day Octavio demonstrated more type history, and talked about conventions in typography. Right after that Mykola demonstrated how calligraphy helps to understand the structures of letterforms.

Let’s take a look at was was achieved during the two-day event. All participants were able to get a printout of their typeface and make several iterations of the design process. Type design is no longer ‘Rocket Science’ for the Crafting Type participants.

The final critique gave valuable insights to students on improving their projects. Of course there’s a lot of work to be done to produce professional fonts from these projects. We hope that students received an essential understanding of what it is like to craft original typefaces, and will benefit from using the newly-obtained skills in their day-to-day practices.

All vertical strokes are rounded towards the baseline, which is why technically there is no sense for overshoots in rounded letters like O. Marmelad performs well on screen because of its soft rounded features and generous x-height.

As the name suggests(Horobchyk is Ukrainian for sparrow), the initial idea was to create a typeface-companion for Marko the sparrow — a cartoon character by illustrator and type designer Zhenya Spizhovyi.
